While the history of Valentine’s Day is hotly debated, there’s no denying that roses are the most classically romantic flower there is. Given as an expression of passion, desire, and above all, love, the rose has quickly become the archetype of February 14th, but what is the story behind this enduring symbol?
The traditional red rose began its illustrious symbolic history during the Greek and Roman eras, where it was tied to Aphrodite, or Venus, the goddess of love. But the history of giving roses on Valentine’s Day originated from the Victorians, who wished to communicate feelings that could not be spoken.
This tradition has inspired people over the years to develop a language of roses by ascribing meanings to different colours, varieties and numbers given.
Red: The customary red rose is an unmistakable expression of love and deep emotion, but can also convey respect, admiration or devotion. The giving of a dozen red roses is the most popular, meaning “be mine”, while a ‘perfect 10’ is an expression of perfection.
White: Early traditions used white roses as a symbol of true love, an association which later became the hallmark of the red rose. The elegance of the white rose is the perfect way to convey innocence and purity, but there is also no denying that they make the perfect added touch to any interior space!
Pink: Although there are a number of variations on the pink rose, typically, the flower conveys gentle emotions such as admiration, gratitude and joy.
Yellow: Unlike other colours, yellow roses do not carry an undertone of romance; they are an expression of purely platonic emotions. The giving of yellow roses is a way to honour a friendship and new beginnings.
Mixed: What better way to express your feelings than to create a bouquet of emotions? Red and white are a popular combination to signify unity, while the sunset of yellow with a red tip expresses falling in love.
