We are always on the lookout for new research highlighting our favourite topic, the benefits of plants, and we were delighted when we stumbled across this great article from the BBC.

In the not so distant future, doctors may start offering health advice encouraging patients to surround themselves with nature to help beat certain health issues.

This recent headline is a result of research carried out by Stanford University, which examined the impact that natural environments can have on our health by comparing the effects of a stroll in an urban environment vs. a 90-minute walk among oaks, birds and squirrels.

Results from the study indicated that the brain scans of participants who took a 90-minute walk among oaks, birds and squirrels showed reduced activity in an area of the brain linked to the risk of mental illness.

According to Gregory Bratman of Stanford University, “There’s an increasing body of evidence showing that natural versus urban areas benefit us at least emotionally with our mood and possibly also our cognitive development too”.
