After a number of years as a higher education provider, Southampton Solent was awarded university status in July 2005. It is particularly well known for the excellence of its provision in maritime, the creative industries and sport. The University’s glittering alumni include fashion designer, Jenny Packham, former Hampshire and England cricketer, Bobby Parks and leading yacht and boat designers, Ed Dubois and Bill Dixon.
Southampton Solent University recognises the importance of an open, green and inspiring learning environment, and has brought in an interior landscaper to help transform its rapidly growing student campus.
The University followed a formal tender process, seeking a contractor who could clearly demonstrate the University’s stringent selection criteria, which evaluate relevant experience and expertise; customer service and quality assurance; ethics and sustainability; innovation and added value.
After demonstrating their ability to meet the University’s criteria, Green Team Interiors were awarded the contract with Southampton Solent in November 2013.
Following a site meeting, Vicki Munday from Green Team Interiors created the first phase of the design specification, which highlighted the key elements of shape, form and colour. Green Team Interiors were keen to mirror the contemporary style displayed within both the campus and the architectural plans for the University’s new teaching building.
To reflect the curves of the corridors and reception desks, Green Team Interiors chose Curvy S-shaped and Marilyn planters in striking flame red, brilliant white and jet black, echoing the University’s brand colours.
Plant varieties were carefully selected for their specific locations, taking into account light levels, temperature variations and traffic flow. Details of specific plant varieties used can be found below.
A further meeting took place mid-November to finalise the specification, and the displays were installed within the University by mid-December.
Ruth Neal, Founder and Managing Director of Green Team Interiors said, “We are absolutely delighted to be working with such a prestigious organisation as Southampton Solent University.
