‘Sometimes less is just less’
As you may already know, the benefits of plants is one of our favourite topics and we couldn’t help but share this interesting article we spotted in The Guardian last week.
Dr Craig Knight from Exeter University and other psychologists have been studying the effects of plants for 10 years and recently concluded that employees were 15% more productive when sparse workplaces were filled with just a few plants.
Over the last year and a half, Dr Craig Knight visited two offices to highlight how a splash of greenery could rapidly improve performance. Keen to remove the fashion for ‘lean’ offices, they included one plant per square metre. The new additions meant that employee performance on memory retention and other basic tests improved substantially.
Commenting on his findings, Dr Craig Knight stated “If you put an ant into a ‘lean’ jam jar, or a gorilla in a zoo into a ‘lean’ cage, they’re miserable beasties. People in “lean” offices are no different. If you are working in an environment where there’s something to get you psychologically engaged, you are happier and you work better.”
