Time flies like an arrow… fruit flies like a banana

It’s an old joke, a play on words based on the Latin expression ‘tempus fugit’, meaning ‘time flies’ and the attraction of the fruit fly, or Drosophila melanogaster, to bananas, the edible herb, Latin name Musaacuminata.

Having just read all that, you’re probably thinking ‘well that’s 30 seconds of my life I’m not getting back’.

So, what’s the point of this blog?

Well there isn’t one really, but sometimes it’s good to just sit and muse on a point, lazily going nowhere, just thinking and letting the mind drift off in whatever direction it wants. The thought I actually started with was ‘time, what’s that all about then?’

Not in a clever clogs sort of way, I’m no Stephen Hawking that’s for sure. I was thinking about how we measure time, minutes, hours, and days obviously but then there’s the seasons. As plant people we naturally think of spring and summer as times of growth, autumn is harvest and winter is hunkering down and getting on with indoor jobs.

Sometimes, our natural order gets jumbled up, we are about to enter summer and here at Green Team we are busy working on our Christmas collections, visiting suppliers and working on designs. It’s rather odd going home after a day looking at baubles and candy canes, feeling more like tucking into a roast dinner with all the trimmings rather than a nice light salad.

But time marches on relentlessly, and our modern idea of chronology would seem laughably inconsequential to our ancestors, after all it’s not that long ago since we were governed by the weather, the tides, and the seasons, and not the unforgiving clock on the wall.

Today, our deadlines are mainly self-imposed, getting settled to watch Coronation Street is hardly comparable to making sure that the harvest is safely gathered in before it’s ruined by frost. Some industries of course still work to a different schedule, farmers and fishermen for example, and thank goodness that we have these great people, prepared to work so hard in all weather’s and conditions to make sure we are all fed.

So there you have it, a quick blog about nothing that took little time to write and even less time to read. I hope you weren’t expecting answers, who do you think I am, Stephen Hawking?

Time spent thinking is never wasted.
