Yesterday was International Women’s Day, and like most good businesses we posted a supportive message on our social media pages, here it is :
Today is #InternationalWomensDay.
Women are at the heart of Green Team Interiors and we wouldn’t be where we are without incredibly strong women.
We celebrate you today and every day. “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” – Unknown
It was a perfectly fine message, so why the apology?
Because in posting this, did we really consider the day or were we a little bit guilty of a reflex action, just another part of a social media schedule?
International Women’s Day deserves more than that, it deserves our focus, our attention, our commitment to do more, to raise awareness and to campaign, not just every March the 8th, but every single day.
We can never lose sight of the fact that this is not just a day for us (and yes of course there are real issues that must be addressed at home), it’s also a day for the world to unite, to support countries where women’s rights are barely considered, if indeed they are at all.
It is our duty to do more than just post a Tweet.
In writing this blog, we can consider our very own founder, Ruth Neal, who together with her partner Chris Davis created Green Team Interiors, having had the idea that there is a ‘Better Way’ to do business, a kinder, more respectful way with an absolute commitment not just to gender equality, but to genuine equality.
Green Team Interiors began in 2000 with an idea formed by two generous people, enjoying a holiday, suspended 100 feet above the jungle floor in Kerala, West India. Now, more than 20 years later, we continue to build on their promise to create a plant business dedicated to the development of sustainable, environmentally aware, ethical relationships.
We will celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness, challenge bias, smash stereotypes and make some noise, of course we will, it’s our duty, not just because our business was built by a strong woman but because it’s the right thing to do… it’s not just a ‘Better Way’, it’s the only way.
