Hippeastrum, commonly known as Amaryllis, is a monotypic (consisting of one species) plant that originates from South America and South Africa. Meaning “to sparkle” in Greek, Amaryllis have been growing in popularity during the winter months thanks to their bright trumpet-shaped flowers, which make a colourful addition to indoor landscapes over the Christmas period. Their tender bulbs are moderately easy to grow, and a single one can last for 75 years if well cared for.
